Do we issue library cards?
No, we do not have actual cards, but each PMMS student is given an ID number for library use when entering grade 5, which will remain the same during the 4 years at Powder Mill Middle School. With the new Destiny system, the student ID is a 6 digit number. It's not ncessary to memorize it...we will look patrons up by last name!
How many items can be checked out at a time?
Students are encouraged to borrow books from the library media center to be used to complete class assignments and to be read for personal enjoyment. Students may borrow 2 items at any given time. If any item is coming up overdue on the record, that item must be either renewed or returned before another may be checked out.
How long is a loan period?
Library materials may be checked out for two weeks with an option for a single renewal of two more weeks. The item must be brought to the library for renewal. Any overdue item which has been requested by another student , cannot be renewed.
Do we charge fines if items are returned late?
There are no overdue fines, but we ask borrowers to please return materials on time, so that they will be availabe to others. At the end of a term, students with overdue materials will be notified. If not returned by the date that grades close, parents will be notified. Parents are asked to help their middle-schooler resolve the problem by either returning or renewing the items. If materials are lost or damaged beyond repair, they must be replaced. We will accept either cash or check, or a new replacement copy of the item in its same format...hardcover or paperback.
What if a book you need is checked out to someone else and there are no duplicate copies?
You may ask a librarian to place a hold on the item you need. When it is returned, a note will be placed in your homeroom teacher's mailbox to let you know that it is available. Items will be held for a period of one week. If not checked out by that time, the item will be put back on the shelf.
What if we don't own what you need?
We are able to browse public library collections online through the CWMARS catalog to determine the location of an item we do not own. Through an interlibrary loan cooperation with this consortium, we may borrow materials from area public library collections. Please ask a librarian to place a request for what you need. Materials are delivered weekly to the Southwick Public Library. Plan your request time accordingly. Since most area libraries do charge for overdue items, you will be responsible for any fines or replacement fees incurred.
